Diamond Education

The 4Cs of Diamonds – cut, color, clarity, and carat weight – happen to be the most important characteristics you need to understand and consider while purchasing a diamond. Along with the 4Cs, you should also know about the fluorescence aspect of diamonds. Learning about each one of these characteristics is vital since most jewelers and pawnshops often lack the education and information to accurately appraise fine jewelry.

Cut

The cut of the diamond refers to how well a raw stone is professionally cut and polished. The finished results will greatly impact the brilliant shine and beauty of the diamond.

Color

The term color is one of the second most important 4Cs and is used to define the natural tint found in a diamond. A colorless diamond will always be of high-quality than one that has a touch of color.

Clarity

A diamond’s clarity is determined by its overall visual appearance, which can include surface blemishes and inclusions. The less visible these imperfections are, the more valuable the diamond will be.

Carat

Diamond carats are used as a way to define the physical weight of a diamond, not it’s size. With that being said, large diamonds are far more valuable since they are highly sought after, yet hard to come by.

Fluorescence

About 25% to 35% of the diamonds in the world are fluorescence. This means when one is held under a UV (ultraviolet) ) rays, it will emit a soft blueish light or a rare yellow or orange light. It’s also good to note that this fluorescence element found within these diamonds has no negative on its overall appearance.
